There is a distributed computing project based on the boinc architecture that is working to interpret data from a couple of large intereometers in the hopes of detecting evidence of Einsteins proposed gravitational waves.


I joined that project a few months back, and also joined a “team” within that project. The concept of teams within the project is kind of silly and there realy is no practical reason for joining one, other than a shared interest in something other than physics (everyone in the project already shares that interest, duh). So, I joined the Ubuntu Linux team, which was limping along kind of slowly. The team founder has been sort of MIA for a while, too, so as of today I have assumed the team “foundership”.


Anyway, if you are interested in donating some spare computer cycles to answering a pretty big question in physics, please join the team. Also, if you are already contributing to a project based on boinc, you can easily add additional projects and dictate how your spare computing cycles are divided among the projects.
